Nat West came
from the merger in 1968 of the National Provincial Bank (est.1833)
and Westminster Bank (est.1836), the two previous banks can be traced
back to the 1650's. The new National Westminster started trading
on 1st January 1970 with the three-arrowheads symbol as its logo.
It had 3,600 branches and in 1972 introduced the bank's first credit
card, Access and computer-linked cash machines in 1976.
After the 'Big
Bang' in the 1980s Nat West entered the securities business to create
NatWest Investment Bank. Expansion in the USA, the Far East and
Europe came about to provide Nat West international banking services
to large companies.

and touch-screen share dealing also became available in the 1980s
as well as Nat West Home Loans and the Small Business services,
Switch debit card was introduced in the late 80s. The Royal Bank
of Scotland Group acquired NatWest in March 2000 for £21 billion
which was the largest UK take-overs .
