Young driver UK motor insurance
Young drivers can
get cheaper UK motor insurance now for themselves by earning a no claims
bonus as a named driver on their parents car. This is only available from
Directline for the moment but in the future other motor insurance companies
may follow
.
The cheapest and
quickest way to get on the road for most is to get yourself added to your
parents’ car(s) insurance. This will usually be a fairly cheap way of
doing it, so long as they don’t drive big and flashy vehicles. They may
already have an ‘any driver’ policy, in which case you’re away – though
be careful of the small print with such a policy: it may exclude new and/or
young drivers.
Best ways of getting
cheaper young motor insurance for yourself are;
- Buy a car from
a low insurance group, usually small engine and not too old
- Do not make any
modification to the car
- Add Thatcham security
category 1 alarm or cat 2 immobiliser, if not already fitted
- If your parents
are with Direct line ask to be included as a named driver and start
earning your no claims bonus
- Shop around as
much as possible, follow up recommendations
- Compare and buy
online for an extra discount
- Do not have an
any driver policy, just yourself or add a parent.
- For cheap cars
go for third party only or third party fire and theft
- Increase your
voluntary excesses in addition to any compulsory excess
The 3 categories
of motor insurance are
- Third Party Only,
covers the policyholder against damage to a third party's property or
to the third party themselves, a Third Party Only policy will pay for
the repair to that other car, and will pay for any medical claims or
injuries suffered by the occupant(s) of that other car and any passengers
in your car other than you. A Third Party Only policy will not pay for
the costs of repairing your own vehicle nor will it pay anything toward
your medical expenses and if your vehicle is stolen or sets on fire,
a Third Party Only policy will not make any payment toward the theft
or repair of the car.
- Third Party Fire
& Theft, exactly the same as the Third Party Only policy, but will also
pay out in the event that your car is stolen or sets on fire.
- Fully Comprehensive,
will pay-out for third party damages and injuries, will pay-out in the
event of your car being stolen or set on fire, and will also pay for
any damage to your own car (regardless of whose fault the accident was).
