Named driver discount UK motor
insurance
A named driver discount
on your UK motor insurance policy means that the vehicle is only covered
for drivers named on the policy and no one else, this makes your insurance
much cheaper than having an all driver policy/
.
One of Britain's
biggest car insurers has become the first to offer no claims bonus discounts
to drivers named on others' policies. The offer will benefit the huge
number of young drivers who start off their motoring careers as named
drivers on another's policy, by allowing them to build up a no-claims
discount if they do not make a claim.
Direct Line is the
first major insurance company in the UK that recognises named drivers’
No Claims history If you have named drivers on your Direct Line car insurance
policy, you (and they) will be pleased to know that Direct Line have become
the first major insurance company in the UK to offer Named Driver No Claims
Discounts. This means that when Direct Line provide your named drivers
with a quote for Direct Line car insurance, they’ll recognise every year
they haven’t made a claim on your policy. Taking advantage of this deal
couldn’t be easier. Your named drivers’ no claims histories are automatically
stored on their system, so when they come to apply for their own policy
they simply need to give Direct Line your details online or on the phone
and we can identify them immediately, at which point your named driver
will be able to receive a No Claims Discount that could be as much as
65% of their premium.
Young drivers often
begin driving life as named drivers, but then struggle to take out their
own policies in later years as they have not built up a no claims bonus.
The move will also benefit the millions of experienced drivers who have
built up no claims bonuses but are then at risk of losing them due to
sharing a car with wives, husbands and partners.
For example an 18-year-old
who spent three years as a named driver and did not make a claim would
build up a 50% discount if they switched to a policy in their own name
aged 21. Meanwhile, a couple sharing a car would be able to continue maintaining
the typical maximum five years and over no claims bonus that brings a
reduction of 70% on the price of an insurance premium.
Drivers hoping to
benefit from the plan will not be able to shop around for car insurance
from other firms, as Direct Line is the only insurer to offer named driver
no-claims discounts.
You may think that
putting the insurance in someone else’s name and having yourself as a
named driver will be a clever way to cut your premium, but insurance companies
cottoned on to that years ago. They’ll ask you how many cars there are
in the house and how many drivers, and who mainly drives each car. Answer
less than truthfully and you might find your cover is invalid. Premium
levels will principally be determined over who has access the car – only
if you are genuinely an ‘occasional’ user of the car will the premium
be reduced.
